Six culinary teams from across the state gathered around scorching griddles on Monday to compete for one of the most celebrated culinary titles in the region during the annual Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge at the New Mexico State Fair. Following an intense showdown of flavor, technique, and spice, Albuquerque-based restaurant Fuego 505 emerged victorious, capturing first place in the highly anticipated cook-off.

For the participants and spectators gathered at the fairgrounds, the high-stakes cook-off represented far more than a routine culinary showcase. Matty Barela, co-owner of the winning West Side Albuquerque establishment Fuego 505, underscored the immense significance of the contest, stating that securing a victory at the New Mexico State Fair is the equivalent of winning the world championships for green chile cheeseburgers.

The competition area came alive with culinary action as fairgoers looked on from the sidelines. Chefs could be seen managing bubbling pots of rich green chile queso while others carefully flipped sweet caramelized onions and achieved the perfect crisp on their seasoned meat patties, filling the air with the unmistakable aromas of New Mexico's signature ingredients.

As a cherished and long-standing tradition of the State Fair, the Green Chile Cheeseburger Challenge requires contenders to deliver excellence across several strict benchmarks. Judges were tasked with evaluating every submitted burger on the quality of its patty, the flavor and heat of the green chile, the visual presentation, and the harmony of its overall components.

The operational parameters of the contest placed immense pressure on each of the six kitchen crews. Once the official signal to begin grilling was delivered, the teams were given a strict window of just five minutes to assemble, garnish, and plate their finished burgers before sending them off to the evaluation area.

To maintain complete objectivity and fairness throughout the competition, the dishes were evaluated in a blind taste test. This structure ensured that the adjudicators assessed each creation purely on its culinary merits without knowing which restaurant prepared the plate in front of them.

The tasting duties fell upon a diverse panel of eight selected judges, representing various facets of the community. The roster included local media figures, event sponsor representatives, and regional royalty in the form of 2026 State Fair Queen Taylor Rolan. They were joined by Leticia Romero of Isleta Grill, an esteemed culinary expert who brought the seasoned perspective of a previous two-time champion of the event.

Taking part in the tasting process proved to be a formidable physical and sensory challenge for the judging panel. Over the course of the session, each judge consumed the equivalent of two full cheeseburgers while sampling the distinct creations crafted by the six competing restaurants.

Gena Goodson, the associate publisher of Albuquerque the Magazine who served on the panel, offered a lighthearted reflection on the intensity of the assignment. She remarked that the underlying spirit of the challenge is to consume as much as possible, endure the intense heat until your tongue burns, and ultimately walk away wishing for the opportunity to experience the entire meal all over again.

The thorough evaluation process unfolded over a span of two hours, encompassing the blind tasting, judge deliberations, and careful tallying of the official scorecards before the final results could be announced to the awaiting crowd.

When the final tallies were confirmed, Fuego 505 celebrated its championship triumph. Second place was awarded to La Villa Burgers & Boba, which traveled from Santa Rosa to showcase its take on the classic dish, while third place went to Belen's Fat Sats.

In addition to the primary judging panel's awards, the competition included a dedicated category decided entirely by the attending public. More than 100 fairgoers cast their ballots in the People's Choice division, ultimately choosing Aztec-based Badlands Burgers & Brews as the creator of the day's most popular burger.

Christopher Goblet, who served as the official scorekeeper for the contest, observed the close nature of the battle while keeping his ballot spreadsheet carefully guarded. Reflecting on the tight race, Goblet noted that his 11 years of tracking votes in the competition have demonstrated just how transformative a strong showing can be for local food businesses.

According to Goblet, past contenders have used the spotlight of the fair to achieve major commercial success, pointing to Laguna Burger's trajectory from frequent fair contestant to opening a location within the airport. He emphasized that the overarching spirit of the State Fair lies in offering visitors the chance to discover new culinary experiences that foster a sense of shared pride.
