Annual Pawpaw Festival Set to Return to Northern Illinois With Free Tastings and Expanded Attractions

The village of Paw Paw, Illinois, is preparing to welcome thousands of visitors once again this autumn as the Paw Paw Lions Club hosts its third annual Pawpaw Festival. Scheduled to kick off at 10 a.m. on Sept. 26, the upcoming gathering will take place at Paw Paw Veterans Park, situated at 314 Chapman St. Offering free general admission, the one-day celebration is structured to accommodate an expanding audience eager to discover the unusual native fruit that shares the community’s namesake.

At the center of the festivities is the pawpaw, recognized by horticulturists and fruit enthusiasts as the largest native tree fruit indigenous to the North American continent. Celebrated for its unique culinary qualities, the pawpaw yields a distinctively tropical flavor profile that blends notes reminiscent of banana, mango, and pineapple. The annual festival serves both as an educational spotlight on this native crop and as a cultural celebration honoring the small Illinois municipality whose identity is linked to it.

Community organizers are aiming for an even larger footprint in 2026 after experiencing remarkable turnout during the festival's sophomore year. In 2025, approximately 5,000 people flocked to the village, turning what began as a modest civic initiative into a rapidly growing regional tourist attraction. The upcoming edition seeks to build on that momentum, offering an expanded slate of activities and improved logistical support for traveling attendees.

The festival's drawing power has reached far beyond northern Illinois. Data compiled from sign-in logs during the 2025 event confirmed that attendees arrived from across the United States and abroad, with visitors representing 20 distinct states as well as France. In total, guests from 210 individual cities and towns registered their attendance. A significant portion of that influx came from the nearby Chicago metropolitan region, which accounted for roughly 34% of all logged festivalgoers.

Neal Rogers, who serves as a member of the Paw Paw Lions Club and chairs the Pawpaw Festival Committee, highlighted how quickly the gathering has matured. Rogers noted that what initially began as an intimate community gathering has transformed into a bona fide regional destination. He observed that guests routinely drive several hours simply to taste a fruit that many people have never encountered before, ultimately walking away with a deep appreciation for the village of Paw Paw.

According to Rogers, the committee has spent considerable time analyzing feedback and operational lessons from the previous year. The primary objective for 2026 is to ensure the expanded event runs seamlessly while maintaining its signature hospitality. Rogers emphasized that organizers are utilizing every operational insight gained from 2025 to make the new festival bigger, smoother, and even more welcoming for the influx of out-of-town visitors.

Central to the event's schedule is the opportunity for attendees to sample and acquire pawpaws firsthand. Festival organizers have arranged for complimentary fruit tastings throughout the day, giving curious newcomers a direct introduction to the fruit's custard-like texture and tropical flavor. In addition to offering fresh fruit for immediate consumption, the festival will feature live pawpaw trees available for purchase, allowing gardening enthusiasts to plant and cultivate their own native specimens at home.

Beyond whole fruit, the festival will highlight a diverse array of creative culinary products that incorporate pawpaw pulp. Food and beverage options will include pawpaw-flavored beer and specialty ice cream created specifically for the gathering. Highlighting the specialty dessert offerings, Chicago’s famed Eli’s Cheesecake is partnering with the event to deliver custom pawpaw-infused cheesecake, blending a quintessential Midwestern dessert brand with the unique native ingredient.

The grounds at Paw Paw Veterans Park will feature entertainment tailored for visitors of all generations. Music lovers can enjoy a lineup of live performances scheduled across the day, providing an energetic backdrop to the festivities. Families traveling with young children will have access to a dedicated Kids Corner, complete with inflatable bounce houses and specialized youth activities designed to keep younger guests engaged.

In keeping with the Lions Club’s community mission, education remains a core component of the festival’s programming. Attendees will have access to educational sessions focused on the history, ecology, and cultivation of North American native fruits. Furthermore, guided tram tours will operate throughout the event, taking passengers on scenic excursions that showcase local pawpaw trees thriving within the surrounding landscape.

Local commerce and craftsmanship will also be on display through an extensive marketplace. A curated selection of artisans and independent merchants will set up booths across the park grounds, offering attendees handcrafted goods, local merchandise, and regional food selections. This market format offers regional small businesses direct access to the thousands of consumers visiting the community.

The successful staging of the festival relies on strong collaboration between local civic organizations, regional institutions, and corporate sponsors. The event is formally presented by the Paw Paw Lions Club in close partnership with the Pizzo Group. A network of supporting entities has also lined up behind the initiative, including Visit Northwest Illinois, Northern Illinois University, Eli’s Cheesecake, Paw Paw Farms Inc., and NuMark Credit Union.

As the late September festival approaches, organizers are continuing to finalize their lineup of vendors and community supporters. The festival committee announced that application processes remain open for interested vendors, exhibitors, and corporate sponsors who wish to participate in the high-attendance gathering and connect with the diverse regional crowd.

The third annual Pawpaw Festival is scheduled to open its doors on Sept. 26 at 10 a.m. at Paw Paw Veterans Park, located at 314 Chapman St. in Paw Paw, Illinois. With no cost required for general admission, organizers look forward to welcoming another record-setting crowd to celebrate the Midwest's unique native fruit harvest.
