A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department officer is recovering in stable condition after being shot early Wednesday morning during an investigation in west Charlotte, triggering a multi-scene tactical response that concluded hours later with the arrest of a 28-year-old suspect.
The violence erupted shortly after 12:30 a.m. on Enderly Road, situated between Freedom Drive and Tuckaseegee Road. Officers were dispatched to the residential corridor following reports of a suspicious vehicle occupied by two individuals. Investigators subsequently determined that the vehicle in question had recently been reported stolen.
Upon arriving at the west Charlotte location, an unnamed responding officer approached the scene and was immediately met with gunfire. The suspect opened fire, striking the officer before fleeing into the surrounding area. Police officials confirmed that the wounded officer did not return fire during the sudden encounter.
Emergency medical personnel immediately rushed the injured officer to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Dilworth. Authorities reported that the officer sustained non-life-threatening injuries, remains in stable condition, and is anticipated to make a full physical recovery.
The shooting initiated an extensive, multi-jurisdictional manhunt across several neighborhoods. Law enforcement officers maintained an active investigative perimeter on Enderly Road for several hours, officially clearing the primary shooting scene around 10:00 a.m. as the focus shifted toward tracking down the armed assailant.
Detectives quickly tracked leads south to an apartment complex located near the intersection of Old Pineville Road and East Arrowood Road. Specialized tactical units, including the CMPD Special Weapons and Tactics (SWAT) team, rapidly deployed to Kings Ridge Road, donning heavy tactical gear and arming themselves with rifles to establish a secure perimeter around the building.
During the standoff, SWAT negotiators utilized loudspeakers to broadcast continuous commands into the residential unit, urging the barricaded suspect to surrender peacefully. In an effort to resolve the confrontation, tactical personnel deployed a flash bang distraction device shortly before noon.
As tactical teams worked the standoff in south Charlotte, another team of officers was dispatched to Coronet Way in west Charlotte, a location near the original shooting site. Investigators carefully canvassed that secondary property to gather and secure physical evidence connected to the broader case.
The standoff escalated further when the CMPD bomb squad arrived on the scene at Kings Ridge Road around 12:45 p.m. to provide specialized technical assistance. For several hours, heavily armed personnel maintained their positions, preventing movement in and out of the immediate complex to ensure community safety.
By approximately 3:00 p.m., police operations at the apartment complex began winding down. Shortly after 4:00 p.m., CMPD Chief Estella Patterson officially confirmed that the standoff had concluded with the suspect taken into police custody without further incident.
Chief Patterson identified the apprehended gunman as 28-year-old Dionte Antonio McCracking. Following his arrest, McCracking was formally charged with attempted murder of a law enforcement officer and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon.
Authorities disclosed that McCracking had active, outstanding arrest warrants related to separate burglary offenses at the time of Wednesday's incident. Public records and local reports further indicated that he has a history of prior arrests spanning both Mecklenburg and Gaston counties.
In addition to the primary suspect, Chief Patterson confirmed that investigators had detained two other persons of interest in connection with the morning's events. The identities of those individuals and any potential pending charges against them have not yet been made public as the investigation continues.
Chief Patterson delivered a stern message regarding assaults on police personnel, emphasizing that violence against the department's members will trigger an immediate and forceful legal response. She affirmed that anyone targeting law enforcement professionals will be held accountable and prosecuted to the fullest extent permissible by law.
The Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police Department is acting as the lead agency overseeing the criminal investigation into the shooting and subsequent standoff. In accordance with standard department protocol for all officer-involved shooting incidents, the CMPD Internal Affairs Bureau has also initiated an independent internal inquiry.
The hours-long barricade created intense moments for residents living within the Kings Ridge Road complex. Neighbor Lakeisha Howie, who resides directly adjacent to the apartment where McCracking was holed up, recounted sheltering in place inside her home throughout the prolonged operation, initially unaware that the wanted suspect was right next door until reading breaking news alerts on her mobile device.
After the standoff was brought to a peaceful conclusion, Howie commended the tactical teams for resolving the dangerous situation without any additional injuries or loss of life, praising the officers for handling the arrest with professional care.
