Chicago Police Investigate After 12-Year-Old Fires Unattended Gun Found on School Bus

An investigation has been launched in Chicago’s Bridgeport neighborhood after a 12-year-old child discovered an unattended firearm inside a school bus and discharged a single shot, leaving a bullet hole in one of the vehicle’s windows.

The frightening episode took place directly outside Minnie Miñoso Academy as students were boarding the bus during dismissal. Despite the immediate danger created by gunfire in a confined space carrying young children, officials confirmed that no students or staff suffered physical injuries during the discharge.

According to preliminary findings released by the Chicago Police Department, the sequence of events began when an adult male brought a bag containing a loaded firearm onto the school bus and left it unattended. The 12-year-old student subsequently encountered the bag, reached inside, and retrieved the handgun.

Moments after accessing the weapon, the boy pulled the trigger. The resulting shot pierced through one of the bus windows, causing immediate alarm among the students on board and those gathered in the surrounding dismissal area outside the academy.

Investigators stated that immediately following the sound of the gunshot, the adult male who had originally left the bag intervened. The man grabbed both the firearm and the bag before rapidly fleeing the scene on foot, abandoning the damaged bus and the shocked children behind him.

Law enforcement authorities have not publicly identified the suspect, nor have they clarified why he was present on a vehicle designated for student transit. It remains undetermined whether the individual possessed any formal connection to the academy or was affiliated with the third-party transportation provider contracted to operate the bus route.

In the wake of the gunfire, the principal of Minnie Miñoso Academy moved swiftly to notify school families about the critical incident. A formal communication sent to parents detailed the events that had transpired during the standard dismissal period at the Bridgeport campus.

In the letter, the principal sought to alleviate mounting parental panic by verifying that all children remained safe and accounted for. The correspondence confirmed that the shot originated from inside the transport vehicle and struck the bus window, but reiterated that no individuals were harmed during the encounter.

School administrators also sought to reassure the wider educational community regarding the physical perimeter of the campus itself. The principal explicitly stated that at no point during the altercation did the firearm enter the school building or breach the academic grounds.

The administrative team immediately alerted both the Chicago Police Department and the Chicago Public Schools Office of Safety and Security to take command of the scene. Both agencies are now coordinating their efforts to conduct a comprehensive security review and trace the origins of the weapon.

The sudden burst of violence in a designated student loading zone left nearby workers and neighborhood residents searching for answers. Those who witnessed the aftermath expressed deep bewilderment regarding how a deadly weapon could be left accessible in an environment meant entirely for safeguarding children.

Miguel Lozano, who works in the immediate vicinity of the Bridgeport school, voiced the pervasive unease felt by the local community. He remarked that the incident naturally raises severe questions regarding how an adult was able to leave a loaded weapon unattended on a school route and why such a fundamental lapse occurred.

Jesse Marquez, a neighborhood resident living directly across the street from the campus, sharply criticized the extreme negligence demonstrated by the gun owner. He stressed that under no circumstances should a lethal firearm be left unmonitored, emphasizing that such reckless mistakes carry irreversible and deadly consequences that cannot simply be taken back.

Reflecting on the sheer fortune that prevented a catastrophic tragedy, Marquez pointed out how narrowly the community avoided a fatal outcome. He observed that while the neighborhood was fortunate to only deal with shattered window glass, the trajectory of the bullet could easily have caused devastating bodily injury or death.

School leadership underlined that the administration takes safety lapses of this magnitude with utmost seriousness. In her address to the school community, the principal reminded parents, staff, and students of the critical importance of speaking up and reporting any potential safety concerns or irregularities so that preventative measures can be taken immediately.

The collaborative inquiry between the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Public Schools remains active, with detectives continuing to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and seek the whereabouts of the man who fled the scene with the weapon.
