Family Pleads for Public Assistance After Deadly Hit-and-Run Crash on Interstate 88 Claims Lives of Addison Couple

More than a month after a catastrophic high-speed collision claimed the lives of an Addison couple, grieving family members are actively appealing to the public for information that could help law enforcement identify the perpetrators. Kamal and Naima Ashrafi were killed when their vehicle was violently struck by a speeding stolen car on Interstate 88 in west suburban Aurora, prompting an ongoing search for two suspects who fled the scene on foot.

The fatal crash occurred on the eastbound stretch of Interstate 88 near Eola Road. Kamal Ashrafi was driving a Toyota Prius with his wife, Naima, when the vehicle was struck from behind with tremendous force. The severe impact sent the Prius hurtling into a roadside barrier, where it rapidly caught fire and became engulfed in flames, resulting in the deaths of both occupants.

According to details shared by the victims' family, the vehicle responsible for the collision was traveling at an extremely dangerous rate of speed, estimated to be in excess of 100 mph at the time of the impact. The sudden and intense crash left the couple’s vehicle completely devastated along the highway.

The tragedy was further compounded by the circumstances surrounding the couple's travel that evening. Kamal and Naima Ashrafi were returning home from a family gathering held early last month in the wake of their aunt's funeral services, making the sudden loss especially agonizing for their extended family.

Immediately following the violent impact, the driver and passenger inside the speeding stolen vehicle abandoned the wrecked car and fled the scene. Emergency responders and police officers arrived to discover that the occupants of the offending vehicle had escaped, leaving investigators with no immediate suspects at the crash site.

Surviving relatives have expressed immense heartache over the fact that the individuals responsible chose to flee rather than render aid or take accountability. Max Ashrafi, the brother of Kamal Ashrafi, described the enduring emotional distress that the unresolved incident has inflicted upon their household.

Max Ashrafi stated that the horrifying circumstances surrounding the crash continue to disturb his sleep, explaining that he remains deeply haunted by the terror and agony his brother and sister-in-law must have endured during their final moments inside the burning vehicle.

The Illinois State Police have undertaken the investigation into the double-fatal hit-and-run crash. While state troopers and detectives have interviewed multiple witnesses who were present in the area when the incident occurred, no individuals have been placed into custody, and the identities of both the driver and passenger remain unknown.

Detectives face additional challenges because the vehicle operated by the suspects had been reported stolen. Family members stated that the recovered car yielded minimal physical evidence, which has hindered law enforcement's efforts to trace the identities of the occupants directly through the vehicle itself.

Determined to maintain focus on the case, Max Ashrafi, who serves as an Addison Township trustee, brought the matter before local officials and residents during a recent township board meeting. During the public session, he issued a heartfelt plea for community cooperation, noting that more than four weeks had elapsed while the individuals who caused the deaths remained at large.

The Ashrafi family continues to hold out hope that a bystander, motorist, or acquaintance might possess vital details about the crash or the people involved. Max Ashrafi emphasized that the assistance of a good Samaritan who overheard relevant conversations or observed suspicious activity could be critical in providing the breakthrough investigators need.

Kamal and Naima Ashrafi were widely known by their peers and loved ones as kind, compassionate individuals who maintained deep roots in their local community. Both were originally born in Pakistan before immigrating to the United States, having resided in the village of Addison for many years where they established long-lasting personal relationships.

Max Ashrafi fondly remembered the close bond he shared with his brother, highlighting their mutual enthusiasm for Chicago professional sports. The two brothers were passionate fans of the Chicago Bulls and had made plans to attend a Chicago White Sox baseball game together before the fatal accident took Kamal's life.

Reiterating their desire for closure, the Ashrafi family underscored that Kamal and Naima were warm-hearted individuals whose goal was simply to be on friendly terms with everyone they met. The family remains committed to seeking full accountability and justice for the couple.

The Illinois State Police have affirmed that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities and family members continue to urge anyone with relevant details or potential leads regarding the hit-and-run on Interstate 88 near Eola Road to come forward and contact law enforcement.
