Groundbreaking Marks Beginning of Fourteen Million Dollar Renovation at White Sulphur Springs Elementary

Administrative leaders from Greenbrier County Schools gathered on Tuesday, September 15, 2026, to officially break ground on a major expansion and modernization project at White Sulphur Springs Elementary School. The ceremony marked the formal launch of a comprehensive series of campus upgrades aimed at enhancing daily educational operations and replacing aging building systems.

Carrying a total project budget of $14 million, the venture represents a significant financial commitment toward upgrading the facility. The extensive capital investment is designed to provide the school with its own dedicated gym as part of a newly constructed multi-purpose room, while also financing widespread infrastructure overhauls across the property.

For years, one of the most prominent obstacles facing staff and students at White Sulphur Springs Elementary has been the persistent scheduling and spatial bottleneck caused by shared quarters. The school has long been forced to conduct physical education classes inside the very same room where students consume their daily breakfasts and lunches.

This shared-space arrangement presented ongoing logistical challenges for school operations, as staff continually had to transition the area back and forth between active physical exercise classes and scheduled meal periods. The daily operational reality of having recreation and dining collide in a single space caught the direct attention of state officials.

Observing these daily hurdles in person motivated representatives from the West Virginia School Building Authority to intervene. State building authority officials recognized the critical need for structural reform and initiated the process to secure funding and develop a dedicated layout capable of permanently separating dining areas from physical education activities.

Under the newly initiated construction plan, students and faculty will finally gain access to separate, dedicated zones for eating and recreation. The addition of the independent multi-purpose facility will permanently eliminate the need to clear out tables for gym class or interrupt physical activities to set up lunch lines.

School leadership has emphasized that the benefits of the newly constructed space will extend far beyond the standard physical education curriculum. Having a dedicated multi-purpose venue will give the administration a dependable location to host large gatherings, assemblies, student programs, and parent events throughout the academic calendar.

Principal Tina Campbell highlighted the broader value that the upgraded facilities will bring to the surrounding area. She noted that the new gymnasium will serve as an asset for local families and sports programs beyond regular school hours, opening its doors to community recreation leagues during the weekend.

According to Campbell, having a modern and accessible facility allows the school to function as a focal point for student, staff, and family activities, while simultaneously filling a community need for weekend athletic and recreational space.

The architectural execution of the project is being managed by the Thrasher Group, which has developed plans to coordinate ongoing construction alongside daily academic schedules. Senior architect Matt Breakey explained that the front section of the elementary school property has been designated as the primary staging area for construction equipment and materials.

Breakey noted that the architectural and construction teams are maintaining close coordination with campus administrators and educational staff. This ongoing collaboration is intended to ensure that construction activities progress smoothly while minimizing noise, safety concerns, and day-to-day disruptions to classroom instruction.

In addition to the headline addition of the multi-purpose gymnasium, the $14 million scope includes extensive structural improvements across the entire campus. The facility will receive a brand-new roof, fully updated administrative offices, a modernized kitchen facility, and an expanded parking lot to accommodate staff and visiting families.

The renovation also tackles vital internal infrastructure that has aged over decades of continuous use. Modern plumbing installations and a brand-new heating, ventilation, and air conditioning system will be integrated throughout the facility to bring building operations up to modern standards.

A key objective for project planners is seamlessly fusing the older, historic characteristics of the existing elementary building with modern additions. Updating foundational utilities like HVAC and plumbing is essential to ensuring that the historic structure remains fully functional, safe, and aligned with contemporary building codes.

Once completed, the extensive project will reshape the educational environment at White Sulphur Springs Elementary School. By addressing longstanding facility limitations and modernizing critical infrastructure, the $14 million initiative establishes a more versatile and comfortable campus for students, educators, and the wider community.
