Hundreds of Michigan High School Seniors Named 2027 National Merit Semifinalists

Hundreds of high-achieving Michigan high school students have reached an elite academic milestone, with 535 seniors from 121 secondary schools across the state being named semifinalists in the prestigious 2027 National Merit Scholarship Program. The newly released roster honors students who earned exceptional qualifying marks on standardized assessments taken during their junior year, placing them among the top academic performers in Michigan and across the nation.

The Michigan qualifiers are part of a nationwide cohort of more than 16,000 semifinalists participating in the 72nd annual edition of the distinguished academic competition. These students represent an exceptionally selective group, designated as the highest-scoring entrants from each state, and now hold the opportunity to continue in the competition for thousands of substantial undergraduate scholarship awards.

The path to semifinalist status began in the autumn of 2025, when more than 1.2 million high school juniors across the United States entered the program by sitting for the Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). From that massive applicant pool, only a minute fraction advanced, with nationwide semifinalists representing less than 1 percent of all graduating high school seniors across the country.

For the students who successfully advance through the remaining rounds of the competition, substantial academic funding awaits. Program organizers project that approximately 6,700 National Merit Scholarships, carrying a combined value of nearly $24 million, will be granted to finalists during the spring of 2027, offering meaningful financial support for their postsecondary studies.

The scholarship pool encompasses a diverse range of award categories designed to support students' higher education pursuits. Among these are 2,500 foundational, one-time National Merit $2,500 scholarships supported directly by the organization. In addition, hundreds of corporate-sponsored awards and college-sponsored scholarships financed by businesses, corporations, colleges, and universities will be distributed to eligible candidates.

The selection process will continue over the coming months as semifinalists fulfill rigorous academic and administrative requirements to advance to finalist standing. The eventual scholarship recipients will be chosen from that refined group of finalists, with the National Merit Scholarship Corporation scheduled to unveil the winners through four successive national releases beginning in April 2027 and concluding in July 2027.

Across Michigan, the distribution of semifinalists reflects academic achievement spanning diverse communities, ranging from major metropolitan suburbs and university hubs to smaller rural and coastal districts. The state's 121 participating schools include both comprehensive public high schools and independent private academies, demonstrating broad geographic representation.

Washtenaw County emerged as a prominent center of academic distinction, led by numerous honorees across Ann Arbor’s public and private institutions. Large rosters of semifinalists were recorded at Ann Arbor Pioneer High School, Huron High School, and Skyline High School, while independent and specialized learning environments—including Greenhills School, Community High School, Father Gabriel Richard High School, and Ann Arbor Christian School—also produced notable groups of qualifying students.

Oakland County also saw extensive representation among the semifinalist ranks, particularly within Bloomfield Hills and surrounding districts. Cranbrook Kingswood School and the International Academy accounted for substantial contingents of recognized students, joined by qualifiers from Bloomfield Hills High School and Brother Rice High School in Bloomfield Township.

Other Oakland County communities recorded strong showings as well, highlighting a deep concentration of academic talent in the Detroit metropolitan periphery. Students from Beverly Hills institutions, including Detroit Country Day School and Wylie E. Groves High School, earned semifinalist recognition alongside peers from Birmingham’s Roeper School and Seaholm High School, as well as Berkley High School and Walled Lake Central High School.

In Western Wayne County, the Plymouth-Canton educational community posted significant results, with multiple students qualifying across Canton High School, Plymouth High School, and Salem High School. The shared educational campus saw dozens of scholars earn qualifying scores, underscoring the district's strong academic presence in the annual state rankings.

West Michigan and regional school districts across the state also contributed meaningfully to the 2027 roster. Semifinalists were recognized from Byron Center High School, Forest Hills Eastern High School in Ada, and Allendale High School, as well as Battle Creek programs including Harper Creek High School and Lakeview High School, and Berrien County schools such as Andrews Academy and Berrien Springs High School.

The statewide roster reached into northern and outlying communities as well, highlighting academic achievement beyond traditional urban centers. Honorees were named from Alpena High School in northeastern lower Michigan, Charlevoix High School in northern Michigan, Cass City High School in the Thumb region, and Cedar Springs High School, alongside Clinton Township's International Academy of Macomb, Chelsea High School, Clarkston High School, and Everest Collegiate High School.

For the 535 Michigan seniors and their respective secondary schools, inclusion on the semifinalist list serves as formal validation of sustained academic excellence throughout their high school careers. As these scholars prepare to complete the final application stages ahead of the spring 2027 announcements, their achievement positions them at the forefront of the nation's incoming college class.
