Hurricane Season 2026: A Year of Minimal Activity as El Niño Strengthens Its Grip

The 2026 hurricane season, thus far, has been a rare sight of tranquility as tropical storms and hurricanes remain scarce across the Atlantic basin. Tropical Storm Dolly, once a point of concern, has now dissipated to the point where it's no longer considered a threat, according to the National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Dolly's remnants, now classified as a low-pressure system, are expected to deliver a minimal amount of rainfall and thunderstorms to Florida, marking the system's last hurrah before it loses its tropical characteristics. The storm is currently north of the Dominican Republic and is forecasted to pass through the Bahamas en route to Florida.

This year's hurricane season has been notably mild, largely due to the impact of the strongest El Niño on record, which has been affecting weather patterns worldwide. El Niño, characterized by the warming of the Pacific Ocean near the Equator, tends to suppress hurricane formation in the Atlantic.

With over half the season passed, there have been only four tropical storms reported, and none have reached hurricane status. By this time last year, there were already five tropical storms and one hurricane, which led to $503 million in damages, according to NHC data.

The absence of severe storms this season is not without its visual evidence. The National Hurricane Center is currently monitoring two potential systems off the southeastern United States, including the remnants of Tropical Storm Dolly. One is a small area of thunderstorms off the Texas and Louisiana coasts, while the other is the remnants of Dolly itself, which is still being watched for any potential development.

The El Niño phenomenon has been particularly potent this year. When the Pacific Ocean water temperature rises by half a degree Celsius above normal, it's considered a weak El Niño. This year, the El Niño index is expected to be unprecedented, exceeding 3 degrees Celsius above normal, according to Columbia University's International Research Institute for Climate and Society. The previous record was set during the 2015-2016 El Niño, when temperatures reached 2.75 degrees Celsius above normal.

Despite the quiet hurricane season, weather patterns are far from normal. For instance, Nepal is experiencing a collapsing glacier amidst a humid heat wave, which has some attributing it to the supercharged El Niño. This weather pattern has caused the weather to feel unusually strange, a stark contrast to the Atlantic's tranquil skies.

As for Tropical Storm Dolly, its weakening comes as a relief to residents of the Florida area. The storm's brief tenure serves as a stark reminder that, despite the calmness of the 2026 season, the Atlantic's potential for hurricane activity remains a crucial area of focus for meteorologists and emergency management officials.

The hurricane season, traditionally extending from June 1 to November 30, has so far been a quiet period for tropical cyclones. With only a few systems forming and none reaching hurricane intensity, this season may well go down in history as one of the weakest on record. The impact of the strong El Niño is a key factor behind this unusual calm, but it's a situation that weather forecasters are closely monitoring, as conditions can shift rapidly in the Atlantic basin.
