LAPD Cracks Down on 6th Street Bridge Minibike Takeover, Impounding Dozens of Vehicles and Citing Underage Riders

Law enforcement authorities in Los Angeles conducted a major enforcement operation targeting motorized minibike riders on the 6th Street Bridge, resulting in dozens of impounded vehicles and numerous legal citations. The targeted crackdown took place on a Sunday when members of the Los Angeles Police Department intervened in a widespread street takeover event that had occupied the landmark bridge.

According to officials, the operation was spearheaded by the LAPD Street Racing Task Force after officers observed a massive convoy comprising more than 70 individuals maneuvering small motorized pocket bikes across the span. Investigators reported that the gathering severely obstructed traffic lanes while participants engaged in hazardous driving behaviors in the middle of the roadway.

Police accounts detailed reckless maneuvers throughout the bridge, noting that numerous individuals performed donuts and wheelies, rode on the wrong side of the road against oncoming lanes, and aggressively weaved through active vehicle traffic. The chaotic display brought regular transit across the bridge to a halt, creating immediate hazards for motorists, pedestrians, and surrounding neighborhood residents attempting to use the thoroughfare.

The demographic makeup of the gathering spanned a wide age spectrum, with participants estimated to be between 13 and 50 years old. LAPD officials noted with concern that older adults appeared to be guiding the large pack, with several of these adults identified as the parents or guardians of the underage youths taking part in the illicit ride.

In an official statement detailing the bridge bust, the police department underscored the inherent risks associated with unregulated minibikes and pocket bikes on metropolitan streets. Authorities emphasized that such miniature vehicles lack legally mandated safety equipment, feature dangerously low visibility to other motorists, and suffer from high operational instability, meaning a single misstep could quickly lead to severe or fatal injuries.

The police department highlighted that its tactical response required extraordinary caution precisely because of the heavy presence of minors. Law enforcement representatives explained that young operators often lack a full understanding of the fatal dangers associated with driving small motorized cycles on busy public thoroughfares, necessitating an approach that balanced strict enforcement with protective measures.

Following the containment of the crowd, officers issued citations to approximately 70 people and arranged for the impounding of around 70 minibikes. The department reiterated that municipal and state vehicle regulations strictly prohibit minors under the age of 18 from legally operating these types of miniature bikes on public roadways, citing California Vehicle Code Section 21720 during the enforcement actions.

Department leadership made it clear that law enforcement tolerance for such gatherings has reached an end. LAPD Deputy Chief German Hurtado stated that the city has witnessed substantial disruption and traffic hazards stemming from these street events, emphasizing that authorities will no longer tolerate the ongoing public disturbances caused across Los Angeles roadways.

Police officials also noted that anti-takeover enforcement strategies are no longer confined strictly to standard passenger cars or traditional street-racing vehicles. Instead, the department's active operations encompass large-scale group rides, mass gatherings of dirt bikes, and unauthorized motorized minibike convoys that disrupt public infrastructure.

Among those detained during the bridge operation were Marvin Deleon and his 13-year-old daughter, Leilani Deleon. Both individuals had their minibikes seized and impounded by task force officers and were issued formal legal citations for their participation in the bridge gathering.

In an interview following the incident, Deleon disputed the department's characterization of the event as an unlawful street takeover. He maintained that the gathering was merely an organized "birthday rideout" consisting of motorcycle and minibike enthusiasts traveling together, while denying that the group had intentionally blocked normal bridge traffic.

Deleon expressed frustration with the law enforcement response, asserting that riding alongside his young daughter provided sufficient parental oversight to keep her protected. He argued that engaging in the hobby as a family unit should not constitute a criminal offense, contending that riding side by side with a parent should ensure a safe and lawful environment.

When questioned about the legal restrictions governing underage riders, Deleon questioned the validity of the statutes and expressed skepticism over the age limitations enforced by officers. He claimed that previous interactions with law enforcement had resulted in minor warnings rather than seizures, provided the participants wore helmets and refrained from extreme driving conduct.

For her part, 13-year-old Leilani Deleon described the experience of being detained on the bridge as distressing, stating that officers placed zip-ties around her wrists that left physical marks. She stated that the riders were fully blocked in by police units and had no intention of fleeing the scene prior to being detained.

Despite the objections voiced by participants, LAPD officials reaffirmed that their operational objective remains centered on preventing roadway tragedies and educating the public. The department stressed that strict enforcement will continue in order to protect young participants from serious harm and maintain safety across all city streets.
