The Massachusetts Alliance of Portuguese Speakers (MAPS) has announced that it will pause its annual awards gala in 2027, a tradition that has spanned nearly a quarter-century. The decision to take a break from the event, which has been a cornerstone of the organization's fundraising efforts, comes as MAPS seeks to reassess its fundraising strategy and gather feedback from sponsors and community stakeholders.
Established in Cambridge, MAPS has been hosting the gala annually, which has historically been one of its largest fundraising events. In recent years, the event has generated between $190,000 and $230,000. However, the organization has noted that the rising costs associated with hosting a large-scale event for more than 400 attendees have presented challenges that necessitated a thorough review of future fundraising options.
"The annual awards gala has been a significant source of support for our mission, but we've reached a point where we need to reassess our approach," said Paulo Pinto, CEO of MAPS. "After nearly 25 years, it's important to take a step back and evaluate our fundraising options, while also considering how we can best celebrate our communities moving forward."
The pause in the gala will allow MAPS to explore alternative methods of generating financial support for its mission. During this time, the organization plans to meet with past sponsors and distribute surveys to gather valuable input on sponsorship opportunities, funding priorities, and the future of the gala.
"The feedback we receive from our sponsors and the community will be instrumental in shaping our next phase of community engagement and fundraising," explained Pinto. "We want to ensure that our fundraising efforts are not only sustainable but also aligned with the values and interests of our stakeholders."
In addition to the strategic review, MAPS is committed to preserving the legacy of the gala. The organization has expressed its gratitude to the countless business and community leaders who have contributed to the success of the event over the years.
"Many generous individuals and organizations have supported our gala, and we want to make sure that their contributions are recognized and integrated into our future initiatives," said Pinto. "We are eager to hear their suggestions and ideas for how we can continue to build on the Gala's legacy."
MAPS has also emphasized its commitment to ongoing community engagement. Despite the pause in the gala, the organization plans to continue its efforts to support Portuguese-speaking communities in Massachusetts.
"The pause in the gala is not a reflection of our commitment to the community," said Pinto. "On the contrary, it's a testament to our dedication to finding the most effective ways to serve our community and support our mission."
The decision to pause the annual awards gala has been well-received by many within the MAPS community. The organization has received messages of support from individuals and organizations alike, expressing their gratitude for MAPS' dedication to the community.
"The gala has been a cherished tradition, and we understand the need for MAPS to reassess its fundraising strategy," said a long-time sponsor of the event. "We look forward to seeing the innovative solutions that MAPS will develop to support its mission."
MAPS plans to share more information about its strategic review and future fundraising efforts in the coming months. The organization is hopeful that the pause in the gala will ultimately lead to a stronger, more sustainable approach to supporting Portuguese-speaking communities in Massachusetts.
