A Milford man accused of stabbing another individual following a dispute concerning the sale of a vape device has been sent for an in-depth mental health evaluation, temporarily altering the trajectory of the criminal proceedings against him. The order pauses regular court actions while clinicians determine the defendant's mental fitness.

The legal development occurred after an initial psychiatric assessment was conducted on the defendant by a court psychologist. Upon concluding that preliminary examination, the evaluating clinician formally advised the court that a more comprehensive and specialized psychiatric review would be necessary before the case could proceed further.

Acting on the psychologist's professional recommendation, Judge Eustis decided to postpone a scheduled dangerousness hearing that had been set to determine whether the defendant could be safely released or held without bail. Instead, the judge ordered Edwyn Guillermo Sanchez committed to Bridgewater State Hospital, a specialized state prison facility tasked with handling extensive psychiatric evaluations for defendants involved in the criminal justice system.

The decision pushes the formal legal proceedings into late September. Sanchez is now slated to appear back in district court on September 28, where the judge is scheduled to oversee both the postponed dangerousness hearing and a dedicated status hearing regarding the outcome of the mental health evaluation performed at Bridgewater.

The severe allegations against Sanchez originate from a violent confrontation that took place over the preceding weekend in the town of Milford. Officers from the Milford Police Department were dispatched to Haywood Street around 6:24 p.m. on Sunday following urgent reports of a violent altercation occurring in the area.

According to investigators, Sanchez was placed under arrest after police established that he had allegedly stabbed an 18-year-old man during the neighborhood incident. The victim suffered severe and life-threatening injuries from the assault, necessitating emergency medical care and prompting a swift response from local emergency personnel and law enforcement.

Police reports indicated that Sanchez and the 18-year-old victim were personal acquaintances who had previously shared a friendship. However, investigators noted that the relationship took a sharp turn when the two young men experienced a bitter falling out directly tied to the attempted sale and purchase of a vape.

What started as an interpersonal disagreement regarding the vape transaction rapidly escalated into dangerous physical violence on the street. Authorities allege that during the height of the argument, Sanchez attacked his former friend with a dangerous weapon, inflicting multiple serious wounds that left the victim in critical condition.

Following the suspect's arrest, Milford police formally lodged a slate of significant criminal charges against Sanchez in connection with the Haywood Street stabbing. The charges reflect both the severity of the victim's bodily injuries and the alleged intent behind the violent act.

Chief among the charges filed by law enforcement is assault with intent to murder. This primary felony offense underscores the grave nature of the attack and reflects the determination by prosecutors and police that the physical assault was severe enough to have potentially resulted in a fatality.

In addition to the attempted murder accusation, police charged Sanchez with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon causing serious bodily injury, as well as an additional count of assault and battery with a dangerous weapon. These statutory charges directly address the weapon used during the confrontation and the extensive physical trauma inflicted upon the 18-year-old.

Beyond the violent felony counts, the criminal complaint against Sanchez includes public order offenses, specifically disorderly conduct and disturbing the peace. These charges stem from the disruptive nature of the Sunday evening altercation in a residential neighborhood and the danger it posed to the broader public.

Sanchez is represented in these legal proceedings by defense attorney Stephen Patton. Patton was not available to provide public comment or offer a statement on behalf of his client when reached on Friday regarding the charges or the commitment order issued by the court.

As the September 28 court date approaches, the outcome of the evaluation at Bridgewater State Hospital will play a pivotal role in determining the immediate future of the case. The forthcoming status update will dictate whether the delayed dangerousness hearing proceeds as planned and how the court will balance mental health concerns with the severe criminal charges Sanchez faces.
