Mississippi Senior Faces Murder Charges After Deadly Shooting Rampage at Gulfport AT&T Store

A violent shooting at a Mississippi retail center has left two people dead and a community in shock after an elderly gunman opened fire inside a telecommunications store on Monday morning. Authorities have taken an elderly suspect into custody following the sudden outbreak of gunfire at a shopping complex in Gulfport, Mississippi.

The alleged shooter has been identified as 71-year-old Samuel Jerome Andrews, a resident of Harrison County. Following his apprehension by law enforcement, online booking information confirmed that Andrews is being held without bond on multiple serious felony charges stemming from the fatal attack.

According to county jail records, Andrews is facing two counts of first-degree murder alongside a charge of shooting a firearm into a group of people. Court records did not immediately indicate whether the septuagenarian had secured legal representation to speak on his behalf regarding the accusations.

The Harrison County Coroner’s Office, led by Coroner Brian Switzer, publicly identified the two individuals who lost their lives in the tragedy. The victims were named as 31-year-old Shane Basquill, a store employee residing in the nearby community of Kiln, and 78-year-old Mary Anne Oberlies, a local customer from Gulfport.

The deadly incident unfolded at approximately 11:14 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 7, inside the AT&T branch situated within the bustling Crossroads Mall retail center. Shoppers and commercial employees in the area were suddenly confronted by gunfire during standard morning business hours.

Investigators reported that Andrews drove up to the retail location, parked his vehicle outside, and exited with a firearm in hand. Before setting foot inside the establishment, he discharged a preliminary shot directly through the building's exterior from the parking lot, according to preliminary local reporting.

After breaching the perimeter of the store with the initial blast, Andrews stepped inside the retail showroom and continued discharging his weapon toward those present. The sudden burst of gunfire created immediate panic for both staff members and customers conducting business inside.

Eyewitness accounts revealed that Basquill acted with immediate bravery when the threat first materialized outside the storefront. Upon hearing a warning shouted from across the room, the 31-year-old worker sprinted toward the entrance in an effort to lock the glass doors and safeguard everyone inside the commercial space.

Witness Courtney Ladner recounted the employee’s final moments, describing how Basquill rushed forward in a selfless attempt to block the assailant from entering the premises. However, the shooter began firing into the building before Basquill could successfully secure the lock, fatally wounding the worker as he attempted to protect others.

The gunfire also claimed the life of Oberlies, who was merely visiting the communications retail store as an ordinary patron. The 78-year-old Gulfport resident was struck during the rapid barrage, becoming the second fatality in the unprovoked assault.

Another witness, Carl Musgrove, arrived at the business in the immediate wake of the initial shooting and found himself face-to-face with the armed assailant. Musgrove described a terrifying encounter in which the gunman directly addressed him before allowing him to step back outside.

According to Musgrove, Andrews exhibited an unnerving and composed demeanor inside the store, warning him to leave immediately while declaring that he intended to kill everyone present. Heeding the chilling directive, Musgrove was able to retreat from the scene without sustaining physical injury.

Following the deadly confrontation, the suspect exited the retail premises and fled the area. Law enforcement officers launched an immediate response, cordoning off sections of the strip mall parking lot with crime scene tape as emergency responders converged on the Crossroads Mall facility.

Andrews was subsequently tracked down and apprehended by police without further reported incident. He was booked into the county detention center, where he remains behind bars without the possibility of posting bail as prosecutors prepare the state's case.

Authorities confirmed that Andrews possessed no known prior criminal history before the Monday morning shooting. Police have not yet determined or released a potential motive behind the deadly barrage, leaving investigators working to piece together the sequence of events leading up to the rampage.

Local detectives continue to process physical evidence and interview witnesses who were in the shopping district at the time of the attack. Anyone who witnessed the incident or has additional details is urged to contact the Gulfport Police Department or reach out anonymously to Mississippi Coast Crime Stoppers.
