Nine-Year-Old Girl Dies and Second Child Critically Injured in South Austin Two-Vehicle Crash

A devastating two-vehicle collision in South Austin has resulted in the death of a nine-year-old girl and left another child fighting for their life in critical condition, municipal authorities confirmed following an early-morning crash along one of the city's busiest transit corridors.

The young victim who lost her life was publicly identified by the Austin Police Department as nine-year-old Lilliana Segura. Law enforcement officials announced on Thursday that the child succumbed to her severe injuries after being rushed to an area medical facility for emergency trauma treatment in the immediate aftermath of the violent wreck.

The fatal incident occurred shortly after the morning rush began on Wednesday, September 9, 2026. Emergency dispatchers initially received reports of the collision at approximately 7:41 a.m., sending multiple first responder units to the heavily traveled junction where the northbound South Interstate 35 Service Road intersects with the westbound East State Highway 71 (Ben White Boulevard) Service Road.

First responders arriving at the South Austin intersection discovered two heavily damaged vehicles: a Jeep Compass and a Tesla Cybertruck. According to emergency personnel, the Jeep was occupied by an adult driver alongside two juvenile passengers, while the Tesla Cybertruck was operated solely by an adult driver without any additional passengers inside.

The severity of the collision necessitated an extensive emergency response, prompting the deployment of Travis County StarFlight to provide urgent air medical transport from the scene. Paramedics and rescue personnel worked swiftly at the roadside to stabilize the most critically injured patients before arranging their transfer to regional healthcare facilities.

Both children riding in the Jeep Compass were transported directly to Dell Children’s Medical Center to receive specialized pediatric trauma care. Meanwhile, the adult drivers of both the Jeep Compass and the Tesla Cybertruck sustained injuries that required medical attention and were subsequently conveyed to surrounding area hospitals for treatment.

The urgent medical response and the complex nature of the collision scene caused extensive disruptions to the local transportation network. Portions of both Interstate 35 and State Highway 71, along with their adjacent frontage roads and connecting ramps, were shut down for multiple hours as emergency teams rendered aid and road crews secured the perimeter.

To lead the formal investigation into the catastrophic event, detectives assigned to the Austin Police Department's Vehicular Homicide Unit were dispatched directly to the crash site. Crash investigators began collecting physical evidence, documenting vehicle positions, and analyzing skid marks to understand the mechanics that triggered the high-impact collision.

Preliminary investigative findings released by law enforcement indicated the specific travel directions of the two vehicles involved prior to impact. Detectives established that the Jeep Compass had been heading northbound along the South Interstate 35 Service Road, while the Tesla Cybertruck had been traveling westbound along the East Ben White Boulevard Service Road before colliding in the intersection.

Investigators have also conducted initial assessments regarding driver impairment and behavior. Police confirmed in an official statement that both motorists involved in the incident have been cooperating with detectives and that neither individual showed signs of intoxication or was found to be under the influence of drugs or alcohol at the time of the crash.

In a formal news release addressing the tragedy, the department emphasized that the inquiry is still in its active stages. Detectives continue to work through physical evidence and witness statements to determine the exact sequence of events, noting that investigative findings remain subject to revision as additional details are uncovered.

The deadly incident adds to a troubling tally of roadway fatalities across the city throughout the current calendar year. Municipal officials confirmed that this collision represents Austin's 56th fatal traffic crash of 2026, with those collective incidents resulting in an aggregate total of 56 fatalities on local roadways to date.

While every roadway death represents a profound loss for the community, overall traffic fatality numbers show a reduction compared to the previous year. During the identical timeframe in 2025, the city of Austin had recorded 71 deadly traffic collisions that resulted in the loss of 75 lives.

As detectives continue piecing together the events that led up to the crash, law enforcement officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who possesses relevant details to contact the Austin Police Department’s Vehicular Homicide Unit directly at 512-974-8111.

Additionally, community members who wish to provide information while remaining completely anonymous can submit tips through the Capital Area Crime Stoppers Program by calling 512-472-8477 or by utilizing the organization's secure online reporting portal.
