Megan Hanni, who serves as the principal of the School for Agricultural and Environmental Studies within the Waupun Area School District, has been selected as the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance Principal of the Year. The statewide honor celebrates Hanni for her steadfast commitment to fostering academic excellence, her collaborative administrative leadership, and her sustained drive to enrich educational experiences for young learners across the rural district.

According to a formal community announcement, the annual recognition from the Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance highlights educational leaders who demonstrate exceptional dedication to rural student achievement. Hanni was singled out for creating an environment where high academic expectations are harmonized with expansive, experiential learning pathways that extend well beyond the borders of traditional school instruction.

Under Hanni’s administrative stewardship, the School for Agricultural and Environmental Studies, widely known by its acronym SAGES, has established a strong record of academic performance. The institution achieved an official "Exceeds Expectations" accountability rating on state report cards issued by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, reflecting significant metrics in both overall academic growth and student achievement.

The recognition underscores how rural institutions can achieve outstanding academic benchmarks while adopting innovative curricula tailored to their local environments. At SAGES, state assessment gains have been coupled with an immersive instructional format that places students directly into nature and agricultural science settings, demonstrating that high-performing schools can redefine standard pedagogical approaches.

Central to Hanni’s educational vision is the school’s guiding operational motto: "walls are optional." Rather than confining instruction to traditional four-walled settings, the institution emphasizes frequent outdoor learning, encouraging educators and pupils to treat the natural environment as a dynamic extension of the everyday classroom.

To fulfill this mission, SAGES provides pupils with diverse, hands-on learning facilities that are integrated directly into the academic program. Students routinely utilize an expansive 48-acre school forest, cultivate productive school gardens, and manage daily responsibilities associated with a working on-site chicken coop, bridging biological science and practical agriculture.

The curriculum also extends into prominent regional ecosystems across the local landscape. Educational expeditions frequently bring SAGES students to Fox Lake and the vast Horicon Marsh, where pupils observe wildlife habitats, examine wetlands, and explore the interconnectedness of rural Wisconsin's natural resources under the guidance of school staff.

Complementing the school's outdoor focus is its foundational belief that "Little Kids Can Do Big Things." School leadership and staff incorporate this philosophy into every grade level, instilling confidence in young students by assigning them meaningful roles in scientific exploration, environmental stewardship, and community-centered agricultural initiatives.

Through structured project-based learning units, students at the Waupun charter school delve deeply into environmental systems and agricultural sciences. Learners are taught to conduct investigations, systematically collect and analyze scientific data, monitor local flora and fauna, and cultivate their own plants and vegetables in designated outdoor learning spaces.

By linking rigorous core instruction with tangible real-world applications, SAGES ensures that foundational concepts in mathematics, science, reading, and problem-solving are directly reinforced through daily practice. This approach allows students to see immediate results from their academic efforts, whether by gathering data in the forest or harvesting produce from school gardens.

Hanni’s impactful leadership was formally brought forward for statewide consideration through a nomination submitted by Waupun Area School District Administrator Steven K. Hill. In his submission, Hill praised Hanni's visionary approach to school administration and her ability to inspire both staff and students toward collective success.

Hill noted in his nomination that Hanni embodies the exact leadership qualities required in modern rural schooling. He highlighted her ability to see promising possibilities where others might perceive insurmountable obstacles, emphasizing that she consistently builds confident, cohesive teams while keeping the best interests of students at the center of every institutional choice.

The educational model championed by Hanni at SAGES serves as a compelling case study for rural school districts seeking to leverage their unique regional assets. By utilizing local forests, agricultural traditions, and nearby wetlands, the school demonstrates how rural communities can design distinctive curricula that enhance engagement and drive measurable academic gains.

Hanni will be formally presented with the Principal of the Year award during the upcoming Wisconsin Rural Schools Alliance conference. The official recognition will take place at a dedicated luncheon scheduled for October 29 at the Stevens Point Convention Center, where rural educational leaders from across the state will gather to celebrate her achievements.
