South Carolina Pastor's Trial Delayed as Defense Seeks Exculpatory Evidence

A South Carolina pastor, John Paul Miller, has had his federal trial delayed as his defense team works to uncover evidence that could potentially exonerate him in the wake of his estranged wife's tragic death. Miller, who is accused of cyberstalking and making false statements, has pleaded not guilty to the charges brought against him.

Federal prosecutors allege that Miller began harassing his estranged wife, Mica Miller, in November 2022, continuing until her death on April 27, 2024. The harassment is said to have included posting a nude photo of Mica online, placing tracking devices on her vehicle, and contacting her over 50 times in a single day. Additionally, Miller is accused of interfering with Mica's finances and damaging her vehicle's tires on one occasion.

Mica Miller's family settled a lawsuit against John Paul Miller in 2024, initially filing the suit to gather evidence of psychological abuse that they believed contributed to her suicide. The family accused Miller of "brainwashing" Mica and subjected her to harassment. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed publicly.

The trial has been delayed multiple times, with the latest motion stating that the defendant has been "diligently preparing his defense." The latest delay was granted by Judge Joseph Dawson III, moving the trial to October 2026. The defense team's request for the delay cited their efforts to interview witnesses and obtain "potentially useful" documents not in the government's possession.

"In addition to preparing subpoena requests for documents not in the Government's possession but that will likely contain exculpatory information, defense counsel have also conferenced with the Government for the purpose of obtaining the issuance of those subpoenas via court order," the request reads.

John Paul Miller has also faced separate lawsuits accusing him of sexually assaulting minors while he was a teacher and pastor at his father's church. These lawsuits were filed alongside an affidavit submitted to the court as part of Miller's custody case against his ex-wife, who claimed that Miller admitted to having an affair with Mica, who was the family's nanny at the time. The ex-wife also alleged that Miller had employed prostitutes and been sexually inappropriate with several underage female members of the church.

Despite these allegations, Miller has not been criminally charged with any sexual misconduct. His defense team is now focused on presenting a case that could clear his name in the cyberstalking and false statements charges.

The tragic case of Mica Miller and John Paul Miller has garnered significant attention, not only due to the nature of the allegations but also due to the ongoing legal battles between the two parties. The delay in the trial has sparked further debate about the complexities of such cases and the importance of thorough investigations before proceeding to trial.

As the trial approaches, the defense team's efforts to uncover exculpatory evidence will be closely watched by both the public and legal experts. The outcome of the trial could have significant implications for Miller's future and the perception of cyberstalking and false statements charges in the United States.

The case of Mica Miller and John Paul Miller serves as a stark reminder of the devastating consequences that can arise from domestic disputes and the critical role that thorough investigations and legal representation play in ensuring justice is served. As the trial unfolds, the nation will be watching to see how the legal system handles this complex and emotionally charged case.
