South Potomac Street in Hagerstown to Temporarily Close for Community Recovery Block Party and Walk

A section of downtown Hagerstown is scheduled to undergo a temporary street closure on Sept. 12 as community members gather for a major public event dedicated to substance use awareness, prevention, and recovery. Motorists traveling through the city center should prepare for traffic adjustments while the downtown corridor hosts the annual Washington Goes Purple Block Party and Recovery Walk.

According to a municipal announcement, the closure will specifically affect South Potomac Street. The designated section between Washington Street and Antietam Street will be entirely shut down to standard vehicular traffic to make room for pedestrians, educational booths, and scheduled outdoor activities during the midday gathering.

The street shutdown is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. and will remain in effect until approximately 3 p.m. To ensure the safety of participants and assist drivers in navigating around the cordoned area, local traffic-control personnel will deploy a variety of safety equipment, including traffic cones, barriers, and detour signage along adjacent roadways.

Drivers traveling through the downtown area will be guided along a designated detour route designed to route traffic smoothly around the block party perimeter. Commuters and local residents are advised to plan ahead for possible travel delays or seek alternative routes through surrounding streets while the street closure remains active.

Municipal officials noted that although regular vehicles and through-traffic emergency vehicles will not be permitted to travel completely through the closed section of South Potomac Street, local emergency service providers will still maintain full response capabilities and access to provide immediate aid within the barricaded area if necessary.

Residents seeking additional information or who have questions regarding the road closure, traffic patterns, and detour routes can reach out directly to municipal staff. Inquiries may be directed to the City of Hagerstown Department of Engineering & Permits by phone at 301-739-8577, extension 125.

While the street will be blocked off starting at 10 a.m., the block party and recovery walk itself is slated to run from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Organizers have structured the gathering as an inclusive, family-friendly event that is completely free of charge and open to all members of the public interested in attending.

The main mission behind the gathering centers on raising awareness about substance use disorders, highlighting prevention efforts, and helping to dismantle the social stigma often associated with addiction and recovery. The overarching Washington Goes Purple campaign seeks to foster open conversations among families and community members regarding healthy lifestyles and recovery support.

According to the organization's mission, Washington Goes Purple operates as a comprehensive public awareness initiative designed to educate youth as well as the broader public on the hazards of substance use. In addition to educational outreach, the campaign works to present practical prevention strategies and encourage an environment where individuals can speak openly about recovery resources.

A wide range of engaging programming is scheduled to take place throughout the three-hour event. Attendees can expect musical entertainment provided by a live disc jockey, alongside a variety of interactive games and community activities suitable for individuals of all age groups, creating a lively and supportive community atmosphere.

In addition to entertainment, several local community organizations will be on-site to set up informational displays and distribute educational resources directly to families and individuals. These organizations aim to connect residents with valuable information regarding treatment, recovery assistance, and substance use prevention programs available in the region.

The event will also provide a platform for local speakers who plan to share their personal stories and firsthand experiences navigating substance use recovery. To demonstrate collective solidarity with those in recovery and highlight prevention efforts, organizers are encouraging all community members and attendees to dress in purple clothing for the occasion.

The midday gathering on South Potomac Street represents one of several awareness-building events coordinated throughout the month of September. More details and continuous updates concerning the organization's ongoing schedule and community programs can be accessed directly through their official website at washingtongoespurple.org.

Among the additional initiatives running this month is an art exhibition titled "Broken Open: Addiction, Recovery and the Work of Love." Presented through a collaborative partnership between Washington Goes Purple and the Washington County Arts Council, the exhibit marks the eighth annual presentation of the Washington Goes Purple art showcase and remains open for public viewing through Sept. 29.

The collaborative programming between the campaign and the Washington County Arts Council also includes a specialized Poetry Pop-Up event. This literary gathering is scheduled to take place at 5 p.m. on Sept. 19, hosted at 34 S. Potomac St. in downtown Hagerstown.

Later in the month, community members are invited to participate in the PROSC Recovery Picnic, which is set for Sept. 26 at the North Pavilion within Hagerstown City Park. Organizers announced that the picnic will feature food, guest speakers, recreational games, and raffle drawings, providing another opportunity for residents to celebrate recovery achievements and strengthen communal bonds.
