Southwest Florida Weekend Community Guide: Inaugural Island Chef Cook-Off and 9/11 Memorial Tributes

Southwest Florida residents and visitors have an active slate of community-focused events scheduled for the upcoming weekend. The lineup provides opportunities to support local hunger relief efforts through an energetic culinary showdown on Marco Island, as well as participate in commemorative athletic challenges honoring first responders and military heroes in Fort Myers and Marco Island.

The weekend calendar highlights three distinct gatherings: a charity cook-off featuring top island culinary talent, a long-standing 5K race dedicated to Sept. 11 heroes, and a vertical memorial stair climb. Together, these events blend civic remembrance, fitness, and fine food while raising vital funding for non-profit service organizations operating throughout the region.

Leading the weekend’s entertainment is the inaugural "Island Chef: Pantry Challenge," scheduled to take place on Saturday, Sept. 12. Hosted at the JW Marriott Marco Island Beach Resort, the live culinary competition is scheduled to begin at 4 p.m., bringing an engaging competitive atmosphere to the island's hospitality scene.

Organizers have structured the gathering as a high-energy, interactive experience designed to showcase the skill of local chefs. Guests arriving for the opening reception will have the chance to sample a variety of hors d'oeuvres prepared by the competing restaurants before the main culinary contest gets underway.

Following the reception, attendees will watch the chefs go head-to-head in a live cook-off environment. The competition will culminate in the crowning of the community's first-ever Island Chef Champion, celebrating both gastronomic creativity and local culinary leadership.

To finish the culinary showcase, the JW Marriott Marco Island pastry team will provide an assortment of specialty desserts for all in attendance. A cash bar will also be available for patrons throughout the duration of the event.

Tickets for the Island Chef challenge are priced at $65 per person. All generated proceeds are designated to support Our Daily Bread Food Pantry, an organization that assists local households and addresses food insecurity across Marco Island and its surrounding communities. Registration details and further event updates can be accessed through ourdailybreadfoodpantry.org/island-chef/.

In addition to culinary festivities, the weekend features major memorial events commemorating the sacrifices made during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The athletic tributes begin early Saturday morning in Lee County with the eighth-annual Tunnel to Towers 5K Run & Walk.

Set for an 8 a.m. start on Saturday, Sept. 12, the 5K will be held at Florida SouthWestern State College, located at 8099 College Parkway in Fort Myers. The run and walk invites participants of all fitness levels to assemble in tribute to the first responders and military service members who lost their lives in the line of duty.

The race directly benefits the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization formed to preserve the legacy of Stephen Siller. Siller was an off-duty New York City firefighter who gave his life while attempting to rescue individuals trapped at the World Trade Center on Sept. 11, 2001.

Registration fees for the Fort Myers 5K range from $15 to $45, depending on participant categories and sign-up options. Community members interested in joining the race or donating can find complete registration information online through RunSignup.com.

The weekend’s commemorative activities continue Sunday morning on Marco Island with the 5th Annual 9/11 Memorial Stair Climb. This solemn and physically demanding tribute offers another venue for the public to reflect upon the emergency personnel who perished during the 2001 tragedy.

Taking place on Sunday, Sept. 13, the climb will run from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hilton Marco Island Beach Resort and Spa, located at 560 S. Collier Blvd. Participants will undertake the symbolic ascent up the resort’s stairwells, paying homage to the heroic climbs made by firefighters and emergency crews at the World Trade Center towers.

Registration for the Memorial Stair Climb is set at $25 per participant. Proceeds raised from the climb go directly toward supporting Brotherhood Ride, a dedicated non-profit organization made up of firefighters, law enforcement personnel, and emergency medical service workers who participate in cycling journeys across the country to honor fallen colleagues.

Participants looking to register or learn more about the Sunday climb can secure tickets through the designated Eventbrite registration page.

Whether testing their endurance on the stairs, running in Fort Myers, or savoring regional cuisine for a worthy cause, community members across Southwest Florida have meaningful ways to connect, remember, and give back throughout the weekend.
