Sturgeon Bay Welcomes Autumn with 26th Annual Harvest Fest, Classic Car Show, and Maritime Street Art Auction

As the post-Labor Day transition settles across Wisconsin's Door County peninsula, the mid-September calendar brings the official start to the region's celebrated autumn festival season. Communities throughout the county are rolling out seasonal programming and weekend gatherings that set the stage for larger October events, with Sturgeon Bay leading the early festivities.

Scheduled for Sept. 18 and 19, the 26th annual Harvest Fest, Car Show, and "Set Sail in Sturgeon Bay" Street Art Auction will transform the city's downtown and waterfront districts. Organized by Destination Sturgeon Bay, the multi-day celebration unites local arts, automotive history, community traditions, and seasonal culinary offerings.

At the artistic heart of the weekend is the culmination of the citywide summer street art initiative. Titled "Set Sail in Sturgeon Bay," the 2026 program pays tribute to the rich maritime traditions that have long defined both the city and the surrounding county. Throughout the summer months, 28 artificial boat sails were installed along public thoroughfares on both the east and west sides of the downtown district.

Each artificial sail was custom painted, decorated, and reimagined on both sides by local creators. Works like artist Natalie Townsend’s "Just Bee ...," displayed outside Novel Bay Booksellers during the summer, illustrate the creative breadth of the showcase. The sail motif follows a long lineage of previous seasonal themes sponsored by Destination Sturgeon Bay, which in past years have highlighted sturgeon, lighthouses, Adirondack-style "Chair-ies," cherries, and bass.

The art installations are currently available to prospective buyers through a public online auction hosted on the Handbid mobile platform. Bidding on the 28 unique sculptures will formally conclude at 5:30 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 19. Community members and visitors can inspect photos of each creation and access the auction portal directly through Destination Sturgeon Bay's official website.

To give attendees a more intimate look at the creative process, festival organizers have introduced a new Friday afternoon artist reception. Scheduled from 4 to 6 p.m. on Sept. 18, the gathering will take place at the Door County Granary on the downtown West Side waterfront. The event features live artist interviews and an expansive display of the sails arranged along the adjacent waterfront promenade, with refreshments provided for purchase by the Granary Wharf Cafe.

Family-friendly entertainment will also enliven the waterfront area on Friday evening. Attendees can take advantage of complimentary Ferris wheel rides running from 5 to 8 p.m. along the water, offering panoramic seasonal views of the city.

Automotive enthusiasts will see new programming on Friday evening as well. The Old Bolts Car Club is hosting a Cruise-In Meet & Greet starting at 5 p.m. at The Lodge at Leathem Smith, located at 1640 Memorial Drive. Featuring available food and bar service, the gathering replaces the group’s prior tradition of a downtown drive known as the "Cruise By the Bay."

The Friday evening car meet serves as the prelude to Saturday's marquee automotive event: the 20th annual Old Bolts Car Club Harvest Fest Car Show. Running from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sept. 19, the show will occupy South Third Avenue between Michigan and Quincy streets, drawing more than 100 antique, classic, and customized vehicles.

Vehicle registration will be conducted on site on Saturday morning from 8 a.m. until noon at the intersection of South Third Avenue and Nebraska Street for an entry fee of $15. The official opening ceremony will begin at 10 a.m. with a formal presentation of the colors and the performance of "The Star-Spangled Banner," followed by an afternoon awards presentation scheduled for 3 p.m.

Meanwhile, traditional autumn revelry will take center stage along North Third Avenue outside Starboard Brewing Co. The festivities begin at noon on Saturday with the ceremonial "Tapping of the Oktoberfest Firkin," conducted publicly by Sturgeon Bay Mayor David Ward.

Following the ceremonial keg tapping, the brewpub will host a series of traditional and novelty strength competitions. At 1 p.m., adult contestants will test their endurance in the stein-holding contest, attempting to hold a full beer stein at arm's length. Younger festivalgoers can enter a dedicated root beer holding challenge at 2 p.m., before the afternoon wraps up with the Beer Puppeteer competition at 3 p.m., where participants must drink from a cup manipulated entirely by a string-operated puppet apparatus.

Saturday will also bring expanded community events to the West Side waterfront around the Door County Granary, anchoring a dynamic weekend that bridges local heritage, artistic enterprise, and downtown commerce as Door County moves into the harvest season.
