Easton Police Department Decides to End Flock License Plate Reading Contract

The Easton Police Department has announced a significant decision to terminate its contract with Flock, a provider of license plate recognition (LPR) technology. The move comes amidst growing public concerns and discussions surrounding the use of such technology in law enforcement.

Chief Keith Boone of the Easton Police Department revealed the termination in a recent announcement. He explained that two Flock LPR cameras had been installed on a trial basis on Depot and Foundry Streets in 2024. Over the past two years, these cameras have been instrumental in several investigations, including the shooting of a juvenile, sexual assaults, breaking and entering cases, and numerous other investigations.

However, despite the successful outcomes achieved through the use of Flock's LPR technology, Chief Boone expressed a shift in perspective based on public sentiment. He noted that over the past several months, he has been closely monitoring the ongoing public discussions and has been listening to the concerns and opinions of residents not only in Easton but also in neighboring communities and throughout the Commonwealth.

Chief Boone emphasized the importance of maintaining public trust and the decision-making process behind terminating the contract. "After considering the ongoing public discussion surrounding this technology, listening to our residents, and recognizing the importance of maintaining public trust, I made the decision to terminate our existing contract with Flock effective at the end of this contract year, which ends in October 2026," he said.

Easton is not alone in reevaluating its use of Flock's services. The town joins a growing list of communities in Massachusetts that have decided to terminate their contracts with Flock. This trend underscores the broader conversation taking place across the nation about the role of technology in law enforcement and its impact on civil liberties.

Critics of the LPR technology argue that it can infringe on privacy rights and lead to potential misuse of data. They point to the possibility of the technology being used to monitor and track individuals without their knowledge or consent. Proponents, however, maintain that LPR cameras can be an effective tool in fighting crime and have been instrumental in solving numerous cases.

As the Easton Police Department moves forward without Flock's services, the department will have to adapt its strategies for investigating and preventing crime. While some may view the termination as a setback, Chief Boone expressed optimism about finding alternative solutions. "We are committed to continuing to serve our community effectively and are exploring other technologies and methods that can support our mission without compromising on public trust," he said.

The decision to terminate the Flock contract also raises questions about the future of LPR technology in Easton. With growing concerns from the public and the termination of the contract, it is unclear how the police department will proceed. The community and the department will undoubtedly be watching closely as the situation unfolds.

In the meantime, the Easton Police Department is inviting the public to stay informed and engaged in the conversation about law enforcement and technology. "We value the input of our residents and are open to hearing their concerns and ideas as we move forward," Chief Boone stated.

The decision to terminate the Flock contract is a significant development that reflects the evolving landscape of law enforcement technology and the importance of balancing innovation with public trust. As the conversation continues, it remains to be seen how the Easton Police Department will navigate these challenges and what new solutions may emerge to meet the needs of the community.
