West Lafayette Police Investigate Consecutive Overnight Vape Thefts Involving Sledgehammer Robbery

Authorities in Tippecanoe County are actively investigating a rapid succession of weekend commercial property crimes in West Lafayette, Indiana, where retail establishments were specifically targeted for their inventories of vaping merchandise. The incidents, which occurred within a roughly twenty-four-hour span over the weekend, have drawn significant attention from local law enforcement due to the aggressive tactics utilized by the perpetrators, which included brandishing a sledgehammer during an armed confrontation with a convenience store employee.

The initial incident unfolded during the early morning hours of Sunday at the Marathon Friendly Market, located along the 1908 block of Sagamore Parkway West. According to official accounts provided by the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department, the robbery occurred at approximately 2:20 a.m., an overnight hour when patron traffic in the surrounding commercial area is typically minimal.

Details released by investigators outline a sudden and alarming encounter involving a 22-year-old store clerk. The employee told responding deputies that he had stepped away from the cash register counter and was in the process of walking outside toward the gas pumps when an unidentified male suddenly charged directly toward him while wielding a full-sized sledgehammer.

In an effort to escape the approaching assailant, the young worker turned around and attempted to run back toward safety. However, during the panicked retreat, the clerk lost his footing and fell to the ground. According to Tippecanoe County Sheriff's Chief Deputy Terry Ruley, the armed suspect quickly closed the distance and stood directly over the fallen employee.

While standing over the worker, the intruder raised the heavy sledgehammer overhead in a threatening posture, giving every indication that he intended to strike the clerk. Chief Deputy Ruley explained that the menacing motion was ultimately a bluff designed to intimidate the victim, as the suspect refrained from delivering a physical blow and instead turned his focus toward gaining entry into the business.

Once inside the Marathon Friendly Market, the intruder employed the sledgehammer as a tool of forced entry and property destruction. The suspect moved directly toward the secure retail display case housing the business's vaping inventory, using the heavy tool to shatter the protective glass structure and access the merchandise stored within.

After breaching the display cabinet, the perpetrator grabbed multiple boxes filled with nicotine vapes and assorted vape cartridges. With the stolen items in hand, the man exited the market and fled the immediate vicinity on foot. Chief Deputy Ruley confirmed that investigators have not linked any getaway vehicle to the suspect's escape from the Sagamore Parkway crime scene.

Law enforcement authorities have released a physical description of the individual responsible for the Sunday morning robbery. The suspect is described as a white male with dark blond hair and a slender physical build. According to the official police report, he stands approximately 6 feet tall and weighs between 170 and 180 pounds.

The investigation broadened considerably roughly twenty-four hours later when a second commercial establishment was broken into under comparable circumstances. At approximately 2:10 a.m. on Monday, a commercial burglary occurred at the Smoke Time tobacco store, situated at 2827 U.S. 52 West.

The close physical proximity between the two targeted businesses has heightened interest among local investigators. The Smoke Time location is situated only about nine blocks away from the Marathon Friendly Market that was robbed the preceding morning, pointing to a concentrated pocket of criminal activity along the West Lafayette corridor.

Surveillance cameras installed at the tobacco shop captured video footage of the early Monday morning incident. According to Chief Deputy Ruley, the recorded footage reveals two men standing outside the storefront at approximately 2:10 a.m. One of the men is observed walking away from the building, while the second suspect forces his way inside the business.

Once inside Smoke Time, the burglar carried out a targeted theft that mirrored the objective of the prior morning's robbery. The intruder focused on the retail inventory of nicotine vape cartridges, successfully removing a quantity of the products before fleeing the area.

While detectives have identified evident similarities between the two offenses—such as the early morning timeline, the specific focus on nicotine vape products, and the close geographic proximity—law enforcement officials emphasize that the inquiry remains in its preliminary stages. Chief Deputy Ruley noted that investigators are not yet officially declaring that the burglar and the armed robber are the exact same individual.

Nevertheless, the sheriff’s department is actively pursuing all potential links between the two incidents. Detectives are reviewing video footage, examining physical evidence, and analyzing whether a single perpetrator or associated accomplices may be responsible for the string of retail thefts.

In an effort to generate new leads and identify those responsible, the Tippecanoe County Sheriff’s Department is calling on the community for assistance. Anyone who may have observed suspicious individuals or unusual activity in the vicinity of either business during the early morning hours of Sunday or Monday is strongly encouraged to contact the department at 765-423-9321.

Additionally, members of the public who wish to provide relevant tips while remaining completely anonymous can submit information through the We-Tip Hotline by calling 800-782-7463. Law enforcement officials hope that community input will help investigators resolve both cases and deter further commercial break-ins in the area.
