Wisconsin Congressman Tom Tiffany Rescued from Lake Wausau After Emergency Plane Landing

United States Representative Tom Tiffany narrowly escaped serious injury late Saturday evening when a light aircraft carrying the Wisconsin Republican suffered a catastrophic loss of engine power and was forced to make an emergency landing in the waters of Lake Wausau. Following the sudden descent into the water, the lawmaker and his pilot had to quickly evacuate the rapidly sinking plane and swim through the lake to reach safety.

The hazardous incident unfolded as the Republican lawmaker was traveling back from a political appearance at the La Crosse County Lincoln Day Dinner. The flight was nearing its destination and was on approach to the Wausau Downtown Airport when the single-engine aircraft experienced a total mechanical failure, leaving the pilot with virtually no option but to set the plane down in the adjacent lake.

Faced with a sudden loss of propulsion, the pilot managed to guide the aircraft onto the surface of Lake Wausau in a controlled water landing. Despite the perilous conditions of landing on water in the late evening hours, both individuals aboard survived the initial impact intact before facing the immediate challenge of escaping the cabin as the plane took on water.

Shortly after touching down on the lake, the occupants recognized that the airframe was beginning to submerge. The congressman and the pilot quickly exited the fuselage into the dark water, swimming away from the sinking wreckage toward a shallower section of the lake where they could stay afloat and await the arrival of emergency rescue teams.

Tiffany described the harrowing ordeal in a public statement published to the social media platform X, providing firsthand details of their rapid evacuation and subsequent wait for assistance. He recounted that the pair immediately contacted emergency dispatchers to report their position and condition as soon as they were clear of the sinking craft.

"After landing, we called 911. As the plane began to submerge, we exited the aircraft and swam to a shallow area, where we waited until emergency responders reached us by boat," Tiffany shared in his online post, recounting the tense moments following the water landing.

Official records from the Marathon County Sheriff's Office confirmed that local emergency communications received notification of the incident shortly before 9:00 p.m. on Saturday. Emergency crews and specialized marine units were immediately dispatched to the area of Lake Wausau to locate the downed aircraft and retrieve the survivors from the water.

Rescue teams from the local fire department deployed an airboat to navigate the shallow waters and reached the two men just after 9:00 p.m. First responders successfully pulled Tiffany and the pilot, identified by authorities as Leonard Boltz, from the lake and transported them safely back to shore.

Following their extrication from the water, both Tiffany and Boltz were taken to a nearby medical facility for evaluation and treatment of minor injuries. According to an emailed statement from Tiffany’s campaign team, the congressman required stitches to close a laceration above his right eye before both men were discharged from the hospital later that evening.

In the wake of the incident, the Marathon County Sheriff's Office took precautions to secure the crash site and protect recreational water traffic. Officials placed a specialized no-wake buoy in the immediate vicinity of the submerged plane and issued a public advisory requesting that all local boaters steer clear of the area until salvage crews can safely remove the wreckage from the lakebed.

Federal regulatory and safety agencies have stepped in to determine what caused the aircraft to suddenly fail in midair. Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board were officially notified of the crash landing and have opened formal investigations into the mechanical power failure.

The aircraft involved in the incident has been identified as a four-seat, single-engine Bonanza. Federal investigators are expected to examine the maintenance history, engine systems, and operational parameters of the aircraft to pinpoint the exact malfunction that forced the emergency descent.

The dramatic survival comes during an active campaign season for Tiffany, who is currently seeking the state's highest executive office. The Republican congressman is running for governor in Wisconsin and has previously secured the political endorsement of President Donald Trump in his gubernatorial bid.

The incident drew swift bipartisan concern and well-wishes from across the political spectrum in Wisconsin. David Crowley, the Democratic candidate competing in the gubernatorial race, took to social media to express relief over the safe outcome, wishing Tiffany a speedy recovery while publicly praising the composure and heroism demonstrated by pilot Leonard Boltz during the crisis.

With both men released from medical care and resting, state and federal authorities remain focused on the technical inquiry surrounding the downed Bonanza aircraft. The incident highlights the inherent unpredictability of general aviation, as well as the quick actions of the pilot and local emergency responders that prevented a severe tragedy.
