Broadway Shuts Down Beneath I-65 in Louisville as Overpass Demolition Begins

Commuters traveling through downtown Louisville, particularly those heading to offices and businesses in the vicinity of Broadway, are facing significant route adjustments following the full closure of the roadway beneath Interstate 65. The shutdown is slated to impact daily travel beginning September 14 and will persist for several weeks as major regional infrastructure work progresses.

Project coordinators with the I-65 Central Corridor Project announced that the section of Broadway directly under the interstate will remain inaccessible until at least early October. The temporary closure is required to allow construction crews to safely demolish the existing overpass structure as part of ongoing corridor improvements.

Motorists are not the only ones affected in the immediate area. Project officials confirmed that the stretch of Gray Street running beneath I-65 has also been shut down to general vehicular traffic through October. However, pedestrian access along Gray Street is being maintained throughout the duration of the work, allowing foot traffic to continue moving through the area.

To help drivers navigate around the active construction zone, transportation authorities have established designated detour routes marked by road signage. Commuters heading westbound along Broadway are directed to turn onto South Preston Street, proceed south toward East Breckinridge Street, turn west onto South Second Street, and then travel north to reconnect with Broadway.

For eastbound motorists, the detour begins at South First Street. Drivers must follow South First Street south until reaching East College Street, turn onto East Brook Street to head north, and ultimately merge back onto Broadway to resume their original path.

In addition to the surface street shutdowns, highway travel will encounter nightly disruptions. Officials with the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet noted that nighttime lane closures are scheduled on Interstate 65 between Jacob and Floyd streets. These restrictions will occur between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. from September 13 through September 18.

A central priority throughout the project is preserving critical emergency and patient routes into the city's medical facilities. State and project authorities confirmed that motorists traveling to downtown hospitals will continue to have direct access despite the simultaneous closures along Broadway and Gray Street.

Specific travel guidance has been issued for drivers who exit northbound Interstate 65 at Broadway but are not traveling to a medical destination. These motorists are advised to turn right directly onto Broadway and continue their northbound journey into the downtown district by utilizing Clay Street.

Transportation officials have strongly urged all other drivers heading to locations outside the downtown medical district to select alternate routes well in advance. Commuters are specifically cautioned to steer clear of the surrounding sections of Brook Street, Floyd Street, and Chestnut Street to prevent bottlenecks and ensure medical access remains clear.

The demolition of the Broadway overpass represents a single component of a much broader infrastructure initiative across the city. According to highway planners, the Broadway overpass is among a total of six bridge structures in Louisville scheduled for complete replacement through 2027.

State transportation planners have sought to minimize full highway shutdowns during this phase of the work. Officials stated that no complete closure of the I-65 corridor is currently planned, contrasting with the major disruption in summer 2026 when a 5-mile stretch of the interstate was completely shut down for approximately two months.

Nevertheless, long-term traffic restrictions remain on the horizon for regional drivers. Kentucky Governor Andy Beshear announced on September 10 that a 1-mile portion of Interstate 65 near the downtown core will be narrowed to just a single travel lane. That major reduction is scheduled to begin around May 2027 and run through late 2028 to accommodate extensive bridge repairs.

The current Broadway closure was originally scheduled to take effect on August 26, but transportation officials chose to delay the start date after traffic congestion created severe complications in the surrounding street network.

That earlier postponement was prompted by heavy traffic near University of Louisville hospital facilities resulting from existing closures along Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street. Planners temporarily halted the Broadway project until necessary adjustments could be made to detour routes to prevent gridlock.

With those modifications now in place, officials have moved forward with the Broadway demolition. Transportation agencies emphasize that the existing long-term closures at Muhammad Ali Boulevard and Brook Street remain active, requiring Louisville motorists to exercise continued patience and caution throughout the downtown area.
