Major Interstate 10 Ramp in San Antonio Permanently Closed for Loop 1604 Expansion Project

Motorists traveling through the busy northwest corridor of San Antonio are adjusting to major highway modifications as the Texas Department of Transportation executes a permanent ramp shutdown. The state transportation agency has decommissioned a critical access point along Interstate 10 to clear the path for ongoing construction and infrastructure upgrades in the area.

According to TxDOT, the permanent closure affects the eastbound I-10 entrance ramp located directly south of the Loop 1604 interchange. The ramp was officially and permanently taken out of service starting at 5 a.m. on Monday, September 14, marking a significant milestone in the regional transportation overhaul.

The affected ramp has served as a primary access route for drivers traveling through one of the city's most congested and rapidly developing commercial and educational hubs. Commuters leaving The Shops at La Cantera and The Rim shopping center, as well as students, faculty, and visitors heading toward the University of Texas at San Antonio along UTSA Boulevard, will feel the primary impacts of the traffic pattern change.

Department officials explained that the total removal of the ramp is a necessary step to allow construction crews to complete future roadway improvements. While the loss of the entry point will alter travel habits, TxDOT affirmed that the work is foundational for the overall reconfiguration of the interchange.

State transportation planners indicated that temporary disruptions will eventually be offset by new infrastructure. TxDOT expects to open a newly built exit ramp in the area later this year, providing an updated routing solution as highway crews advance through subsequent stages of the project.

To guide drivers around the permanent closure, TxDOT released detailed detour instructions tailored to several common points of origin. Motorists already traveling on the eastbound I-10 frontage road are instructed to remain on the service road straight through the signalized intersections at UTSA Boulevard and Hausman Road, before finally entering the eastbound I-10 main lanes using the entrance ramp situated south of Hausman Road.

A separate, multi-step detour has been outlined for drivers approaching from the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road. These motorists must use the eastbound-to-westbound Loop 1604 U-turn at the I-10 interchange to merge onto the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road, continue westward to execute a U-turn at Kyle Seale Parkway, enter the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road, take the initial entrance ramp onto the eastbound Loop 1604 main lanes, and remain in the right lane to connect with eastbound I-10 via the flyover ramp.

For commuters traveling from westbound Loop 1604 to eastbound I-10, TxDOT recommends following the eastbound Loop 1604 frontage road directly through the I-10 interchange to reach the U-turn at Northwest Military Highway. After turning onto the westbound Loop 1604 frontage road, drivers must take the first entrance ramp to access the westbound Loop 1604 main lanes and stay to the right to navigate the flyover ramp to eastbound I-10.

Transportation officials have warned that these detours and ongoing work are likely to trigger substantial travel delays in the vicinity of The Rim and UTSA, with traffic congestion expected to persist for months. Area drivers are urged to plan ahead, allow extra time for daily commutes, and remain alert to changing signage and lane configurations.

The permanent ramp closure represents an integral component of the broader Loop 1604 North Expansion Project, a massive $1.4 billion infrastructure program aimed at modernizing regional mobility across northern San Antonio.

The extensive expansion spans approximately 23 miles of roadway, stretching from State Highway 16, also known as Bandera Road, across the northern sector of the city to Interstate 35. The vast project area addresses several chronic bottlenecks that have long affected local and regional commuters.

According to TxDOT, the project is specifically engineered to increase overall mobility, reduce severe traffic congestion, and enhance driver safety across what has historically stood as one of the most heavily congested transportation corridors in the entire state of Texas.

The expansion is recognized by the Texas Transportation Commission as part of the statewide Texas Clear Lanes initiative. This targeted program is dedicated to identifying, funding, and accelerating major construction projects to relieve intense traffic gridlock across Texas metropolitan areas.

While individual traffic milestones, closures, and ramp openings will continue to unfold in phases across the northern sector of the city, full completion of the multi-billion-dollar Loop 1604 North Expansion Project is currently estimated for 2028.
